18th October 2024 Hiking - Walking: The Dip to Felixstowe Ferry Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Mainly sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3.42 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 18th October - walk **** – Sunrise walk from The Dip to Felixstowe Ferry – Bank of spooky cloud then sunny. With the forecast for today sunny with light winds I was keen to head out early to catch the sunrise and see if there was any mist over the River Deben at Felixstowe Ferry. Mag and I wefre both awake around six and with the huge full moon (Hunter Moon) shining through the bathroom window it looked good as we set off in the van. As we approached the sea there was a huge bank of spooky dark cloud running all along seafront like a mointain range, made us think we were back in France! This meant we would not get much of a sunrise, if fact we didn’t see it until 8, an hour late! We parked at The Dip at 6.30 and set off along the prom, just us and a few joggers and dog walkers with the highlight being the large moon still high in the sky. There was a bit of mist inland over the golf course and fields but next to none over the River Deben itself! We got to the Ferry around 7.15 and I got a few nice shots of the boats on the river but I have seen it calmer as there was a slight breeze causing a few ripples. We then returned and as the sun started to appear above the clouds we headed down to the waters edge and once again with the tide still low walked out onto the amazing new shingle bank with the low sun causing long shadows:) We returned to the van in wall to wall sunshine which continued for most of the day as we headed home for breakfasgt and to send some pics off to the TV weather, sadly none were used but I was lucky enough to get a couple of pics online with the two local papers:) Bike **** - Trimley Marshes – mainly sunny with light winds. As the weather was so nice we decided to pack a picnic and head out on our bikes to do some wildlife spotting at the lovely nature reserve at Trimley Marshes but not before I did my exercises in the sunny, warm back garden:) We set off at 12.50 and got off the terrifying roads as soon as possible cycling past the huge Uniserve warehouse to Cordys Lane. Down along the lovely tree lined lane finially leading to the Suffolk Wildlife reserve, several areas of shallow lakes next to the River Orwell with the tide very high due to the full moon! After taking some pics I caught up with Mag who had set up our picnic by the river near the middle bird hide as we enjoyed our egg sandwiches with just a few passing boats today. We then spotted Roger, a old birdwatching friend cycle to the hide so after our cuppa we joined him for a very pleasant afternoon with the flood in front of us full of birds but the difinate highlight being 6 chinese water deer peacefully nibbling the grass, then these we joined by a herd of fallow deer which included a couple of yougsters and three stags with full antlers, just amazing, the birds were good too, they included egrest, buzzards, a kestrel, curlews, swans, lapwings, godwits and loads of different ducks. Just brilliant and I was pleased I had taken my big lense! We then set off for home for a very welcome cuppa and cake after a knackering but brilliant day! The weekend is looking windy especially Sunday but with maybe loads of rain so might have to give windsurfing a miss. An update on my Dad, he went to Addenbrooks for a small operation which we believe was successful and hopefully he will be back in Ipswich soon, fingers crossed!
